You know
you never give a name to something if you don’t want it used. Grace coined
the term “lettuce edges” to describe these pale light green ruffled edges
that were beginning to show up in the seedlings. Oliver Billingslea admonished
me not to use that term since it was not a pretty description, but it stuck
none-the-less because it does describe the effect so well.
Imagine
a cream flower with a pink blush with an edge that looks like someone had
pasted a strip of iceberg lettuce to the edge and you have a fair description
of ZEPHYR’S SONG. These “lettuce edges” are showing up in a number of hybridizers
gardens and you are going to see more of them. They really add a new look
to the daylily. I have not seen any as huge or full as ZEPHYR’S SONG. With
4” petals, the petals are as wide as some flowers are large. Just a fabulous
daylily. Fertile both ways.
